Noon Boxing Class today in Pacific Beach

October 13th, 2009

We had a guest MMA fighter come in today during Boxing at noon.  The rest of the regular guys were here: John, Joey, Tony and Phil…2 previously have fought MMA 1 is an future amateur boxer and 2 are here to train for fitness and whatever happens after that!  Fair enough!

5 guys in class, all from 140-165…it was a good class!

We warmed up with 5 minutes of jumprope, then intervals with the rope, push ups, squats, burpees and mountain climbers for another 5.

Our guest wasn’t quite as conditioned as our American Boxing regulars but he hung in pretty good =)

With the ring crossed off, 2 boxers worked on changing levels and ring movement. While staying across the X rope from their partner (hard to describe but an awesome drill incorporating shadowboxing, head movement and foot work with a partner) they freely shadowboxed…when either person moved to the new quadrant, the other shifted as well in order to maintain face to face

1 person was doing light bag work

The 2 remaining worked offense and defense drills…

We worked 1- 2 rounds per station and 1 student moved on at a time (not in pairs)…

H2O break

1 person was without mouthpiece so the remaining class was filled with double end bag work while the other boys did punching out drills from the corner.

We ended with some burpees and knee ups for abs and called it a day.

Good Class Guys.

630 Boxing Class

WOOHOO Boxers!!

Awesome workout this morning ;-)

We had a nice warm-up of roping, footwork and shadowboxing.  Baby steps Charlie, I want you to focus on stepping with your punches for right now.  Feel the body weight you have lead your punches.

5 Rounds of Bag Work

  • 4punch combos
  • uppercuts
  • power shots
  • double end working jabs
  • open round

We worked on counter striking for speed.  Partners exchanged straights down the middle to look for the appropriate hole and fire back instantaneously.  Nice job to Kylie for getting bopped on the head, stepping it up and giving back her own medicine to the seasoned new guy ha ha.

Overall great work! Fun class…glad I woke up for it !!

See ya next time early risers.

1230 Muay Thai Sunday

May 31st, 2009

Great Job to those of you who started your week out right…Sunday afternoon Muay Thai class! Yippee!

Thanks to Fran who ran the class through a crazy warm up.  They looked like they needed at least a half hour rest by the time I got there. ;-)

We worked some great overall conditioning in class today.  Everyone got their chance at a difficult hook to knee combination.  Most struggled but a few of you pulled it off in the end.  Nice work!

Make sure you slow down during new combinations!

9am Muay Thai

May 27th, 2009

Good Morning American Boxing!

I really enjoyed today’s class! Great students make it easy and fun to teach.

Today’s class was an intermediate to advanced day.  We were able to work a lot of defense and counterstrike timing.

Partners exchanged combinations learning how to stand toe to toe.  I like this drill because if you are not an aggressive fighter it can teach you how to take punches and keep moving in.

We took one combination to the bag working the same combo for 1 round…pushing intensity the whole time.

Back to sparring…

Repeater drill (another of my favorites)

Partner one is the leader and chooses the combinations, partner two follows and REPEATS.  This is a fast paced drill teaching you to be more aware of what your opponent is throwing.

Back to the bag… intensity

Class continued to work these sparring drills followed by bag work.

Conditioning was a lot of abs and a TON of footwork…again because we were working toe to toe we hadn’t moved a lot today.

*Beginners:  Take your fighting stance seriously, it is the only way you can progress and learn how to throw these harder combinations.

630 Pm Monday

May 19th, 2009

Congrats to all of you who rolled into class after the weekend!  I didn’t want to frustrate anyone with new techniques last night.  You all looked like it had been a long day!  So I decided to run a circuit using every bag in the house.

Seemed easy at first, but as the rounds went on I it turned into one of the hardest workouts we’ve done in awhile.  Great work by Becca!  She was intense the whole time and without much direction managed to still work different techniques each round.

We broke into partners for the last bit of class exchanging the following combinations:

1,2 leg kick (or rib kick)

jab, inside leg kick

right rib kick, left tiep

No shin pads used for this drill just light CLEAN work!

I worked with Billy the Kid for the first time and realized the stories were true!  This kid is a maniac!  Be on the lookout for this up and coming Muay Thai Fighter!

Don’t be lazy, get your butts back here Wednesday!

Saturday CrossFit and Sunday Muay Thai

May 17th, 2009

5/17/2009

Well, yesterdays CrossFit went well…

Mike, John, Heather, Dillon Maile and Kylie all pulled together for a nice little partner workout.

I have some great pictures but Gina has the camera in OC..soooo, maybe I’ll add them tomorrow.  Basically, you get to see how much fun this workout was in the beginning…smiles all around…and how quickly that changed -;-)

Saturdays WOD

  • 1 Time 400 Meter Sprint

Then 3 Rounds of:

  • Fireman Carries (2 Laps around parking the lot…Approximately 120 Yards) The first partner back on the run gets a break waiting but he is the first to carry the other!
  • Farmers Walk 40-60lb KB’s or DB’s each hand   (2 Laps)
  • Walking Lunges (2 Laps) First one done gets a break, but they again are the first to carry!

After 3 rounds, finishing with another:

  • 400M Sprint

Mike 20:09

John 20:44

Heather 20:23

Dillon 21:24

Maile 21:20

Kylie 21:32

Of course, times on this one were just for fun since it was partners…everyone did awesome and survived! ha

I’m getting tired, so I’m going to skip to today,

Sunday 5/18/09 Muay Thai at noon

Dillon, yes the same Dillon from CrossFit, is an animal.  Quickly becoming one of my favorite students, was here, ready, willing and able to keep up to the coaches pace.  Typically there are at  least a handful of students on Sundays, but I think the weather was just too good to pass on the beach today, so Dillon and I worked out together.

We stuck to basic conditioning:

Between each round = pushups

  • ~5 rounds jump rope
  • 3 rounds shadowboxing
  • hands
  • add knees
  • add kicks
  • everything

Bag work 4 rounds:

  • Jab leg kick
  • 1-2 Leg kick
  • 2 Inside Leg kick
  • left check return rib kick

We finished the hour with some more jump rope and then stretched the dooky out of our legs -;-0

Good job hanging in there Dillon!  See ya tomorrow!?

To everyone else, get your butts into the gym!

630am Boxing: Reality TV Stars

This morning the girls got a glimpse of reality t.v.  We had a camera guy follow around 4 American Boxing regulars as they warmed up and pushed through a great Friday workout.

Jump roping as usual

Shadowboxing was 3 drills in one

            1-Hand combination

1-Defense, take the angle and counter

1-Footwork pattern (adjusted for each individual’s level)

We broke into a circuit of bag work

Bag 1: Hand combinations w/ footwork pattern

Bag 2: Hand combinations w/defense

Bag 3: DEFENSE, focus on chin placement and hand position

Bag 4: WOOHOO the NEW double end bag

***My favorite J

Between rotations we of course worked shuffling and quick feet.

Camera brake!  Water and towel required….hair adjustments of course!

During the second half we worked individual mitt work and conditioning.

Great job to Lori, KyKy and Jocelyn for all your tough medball work.  I should have given you a gold star Lori for your effort. LOL

High Five to Kelsey for mitt work of the day.  I know it’s tough when all eyes (cameras) are on you!  Good practice for getting up in the ring!

Very proud of you ladies! Thanks for looking good.

Big thanks to James for taking great footage of typical training at American Boxing…stay tuned for video clips!!

Beginner Muay Thai

May 14th, 2009

630 Am Muay Thai Class: Technique

I had a newbie today.  He left feeling better than he started and knowing what he needed to work on, so my job was done :-)

He had some previous boxing experience before so we didn’t need to work on everything.  We started with our normal 15min warm up of shuffling, jogging, footwork, and shadowboxing.

I noticed the class having some difficulty with balance and footwork for push kicks.  We broke into individual bag work for leg kicks and push kick drills.

Worked a couple good hand to leg combinations for speed.

I was still noticing my beginner having a lot of difficulty on the leg kick so we went back to it to give his footwork some more attention.

To all of you having difficulty on ANY move:

Keep Working!!!

“Daniel Son” didn’t learn how to defend punches and kicks in one hour!  It took many wax ons and wax offs!! lol

Be consistent and breathe…the technique will come.

4pm Kids Class

3 words:

Dustin is AwEsOmE!

This kid did a crazy circuit of squats, rib kicks, straight punches and Spiderman crawls.  I think I saw him turn green for a minute but he still pushed himself through it.  Amazing mental strength.

After every part of his body was drained we worked some leg kick defense and counter strikes.

So strong and only 12 years old.  Kids Muay Thai Boxing class is a sight to see.

6:30pm Muay Thai Class: Circuit and Technique

This was definitely a beginner day at American Boxing.  We did a circuit of  push kicks, 1,2 combos, knee strikes, footwork and squats.  After realizing that every body’s brain was not intact to learn the proper snake rotation (you know who you are) we had to move away from the circuit.

We broke into partner drills.  Most beginners worked push kick defense.  Cheers to Samantha for stepping up and teaching a newbie!  And you thought you couldn’t teach HAHA!

We ended with some serious rotational ab exercises.  If you weren’t running into the cage with your elbow …you get a high five.
